Iconography

Icons can help communicate ideas and information quickly and effectively. They can cut across language barriers. Avoid using icons to represent complex ideas or as a substitute for complex ideas. Instead use them to help stress meaning and give purposeful visual cues.

Consistent use of iconography is a simple way to reaffirm our brand and functionality of our digital products. It adds another dimension of relatability to our design aesthetic.

Basic guidelines:

  • Use icons to support the content.
  • Use simple, recognizable icons.
  • If possible, include a visible text label alongside icons.
  • Avoid using the same icon to represent different things.
    • For example, the same search icon (magnifying glass) should only be used for search functionality, and not used as a way to let users magnify their screen size.

Icon library

Hennepin county has approved the use of Google’s Material Symbols icon set. Consistent use of familiar icons in our county digital interfaces helps users learn and trust or applications. Use sharp, weight 400, and optical size 24.
