Iconography
Icons can help communicate ideas and information quickly and effectively. They can cut across language barriers. Avoid using icons to represent complex ideas or as a substitute for complex ideas. Instead use them to help stress meaning and give purposeful visual cues.
Consistent use of iconography is a simple way to reaffirm our brand and functionality of our digital products. It adds another dimension of relatability to our design aesthetic.
Basic guidelines:
- Use icons to support the content.
- Use simple, recognizable icons.
- If possible, include a visible text label alongside icons.
- Avoid using the same icon to represent different things.
- For example, the same search icon (magnifying glass) should only be used for search functionality, and not used as a way to let users magnify their screen size.
