County response to federal immigration enforcement surge

We recognize that the current surge of federal immigration enforcement is affecting the communities we serve. Our county is committed to supporting you with compassion now and always. Below is a summary of responsive services, partner resources, and county policies and actions.

General supports

Office of Multicultural Services

Offers help for immigrants and refugees, including free interpreters. We can help you connect to county and community resources. Learn more about the Office of Multicultural Services.

Legal services

Adult Representation Services

Provides legal help to people experiencing poverty in civil cases. We advocate for our clients’ rights and provide legal services in several different areas including immigration.

Phone or in-person interpreters are available.

Be at School

Partners with schools, community agencies and other areas of the county to serve K-12 students. We can help refer students and families to other county programs with education resources, technology, and multi-lingual supports. Learn more about Be at School.

Elevate Hennepin

Adult protection

Supports adults who are vulnerable so they can live with safety and dignity, consistent with their own culture, values, and goals. Learn more about Adult protection services.

Cope: mobile crisis response

Serves anyone in Hennepin County who needs an urgent mental health response. Cope has bilingual and bicultural staff available 24/7 for face-to-face, phone, and video visits and uses interpreters when needed. Learn more about Cope: mobile crisis response.

Economic supports

Helps ensure residents have access to assistance, resources and support to meet their basic needs. We can connect you to food, cash, health care, emergency and child care assistance, and housing support. Learn more about economic supports.

Emergency cash assistance

Provides support with short-term aid when residents are in a financial crisis that poses a direct threat to their physical health or safety. Learn more about emergency programs.

Family response and stabilization

Helps with immediate, in-person support and stabilization for youth and their parents/caregivers. Services are available 24/7. Learn more about family response and stabilization service.

Family home visiting

    County policies

    The county is following the law and our policies related to use of facilities and spaces.

    The use of space by the public in county facilities policy (PDF, 1MB) states parking lots, parking ramps, vacant lots, or garages are not authorized for use as staging areas, processing locations, or operations bases for civil immigration enforcement.

    The Hennepin County Government Center north plaza and south plaza are defined as public space and are open for individuals to use, gather or demonstrate. Learn more about rules for public use.

    County actions

    The county's elected leaders and their offices are listening to residents and responding.

    Board of Commissioners

    On January 13, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners unanimously advanced a resolution out of committee condemning the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in our communities and calling for the removal of ICE from Minnesota.

    The resolution also directs county administration to develop strategies to protect workers, clients and residents, in partnership with other local and state governments.

    Attorney’s Office

    The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is asking the public to submit information and evidence to support investigation into the death of Renee Nicole Macklin-Good in Minneapolis. Learn more and submit information.

    Sheriff’s Office

    The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office does not participate in civil immigration enforcement and does not work with federal agencies on civil immigration enforcement.

    The Sheriff’s Office has a responsibility to preserve the peace and keep people safe, so they may be at a location where there is potential for heightened tensions or large crowds.

    The Sheriff’s Office does not control or have the authority to prevent the actions of other agencies operating under their own legal authority.

    The Sheriff’s Office will respond to calls for help or requests for mutual assistance.
