Marriage records

If we issued the original marriage license, you can:

  • Apply to correct information on a marriage certificate
  • Get a certified copy of a marriage certificate or license

Certified copy of a marriage record

A certified copy of a marriage certificate verifies that a marriage took place. 

We need the correct marriage date and applicant names.  If you don’t have the marriage date and names, we can search our records for you. This will cost $10 per 30 minutes.

A certified copy of a marriage license verifies that a marriage license was applied for.

Processing times

Processing is how long it takes us to get your order ready.

Mailing time depends on the postal service.

Regular processing

We’ll have your order ready for mailing or pick up within 3 weeks of receipt.

Faster processing

We’ll have your order ready for mailing or pick up within 1 week of receipt.

  • You must include an extra $20 and write "Expedite" on the envelope.

In person processing

We can issue most copies at the time you apply.

If it's been over 4 weeks since you ordered, use our vital records order inquiry form. 

How to apply

You can apply by mail, drop off, fax or in person.

Mail, drop off or in person

Print and complete the marriage record application (PDF, 1MB).

Submit the application by:

  • Mail - with check or money order to address on application
  • Drop off - with check or money order
  • In person - payment options
    • By appointment
    • Walk-in at one of our locations - Wait times depend on staffing

Fax

There is an extra $9.50 fee for applying by fax.

Pay by American Express, Discover, MasterCard (credit or debit) or Visa (credit or debit).

We have 2 options to submit your application by fax.

  1. Complete application and payment online. Then submit application by fax.
  2. Complete your application by hand. Then submit application and payment by fax.

Online and fax

  1. Start your application and pay online (VitalChek).
  2. After placing your order print the vital records authorization and sign it.
  3. Fax your signed authorization form to 612-348-2010.

By hand and fax

  1. Print and complete the marriage record application (PDF, 1MB).
  2. Fax the application and this fax coversheet (PDF, 1MB) to 612-348-2010.
Marriage certificate correction

If your marriage certificate was filed with us, we can correct information.

What can be corrected

Applicant information

Each applicant can request a correction for their own information only.

  • Missing information
  • Clerical errors or misspelling of before marriage name(s) – corrections to a before marriage first name will carry over to an after-marriage name

Marriage date or place

Your marriage officiant must request date or place corrections. 

What can't be corrected

Name changes that occur after marriage.

Legal name changes are done through district court.

Fee

$40 - The fee is for the review of your documents and is non-refundable.

Processing

We process orders within 2 weeks of receipt. 

Approved requests

We will process the information and mail you a corrected paper record. 

Denied requests

If your request is denied for unacceptable or insufficient documentation:

  • You have 90 days to submit proper documents.
  • After 90 days you must submit a new request and pay the fee again.

Application process

  1. Print the marriage record correction application (PDF, 1MB). 
  2. Fill out but don't sign the application.
  3. Get your application notarized.
    • E-notarization is ok.
    • Signatures of both applicants must be notarized, even if the correction is to information of only one of the applicants.
  4. Provide copies of identification documents. Options listed in the Identification document options section. The documents must:
    • Be in or translated to English.
    • Be original certified copies issued by a government office, or a copy authenticated by the person issuing the document to you.
    • Show the name exactly as it should appear on the marriage record.
    • Be issued at or before the time of marriage with date clearly marked.
    • Show what your legal name was at or before time of application for marriage.
  5. Submit application by:
    • Mail - with check or money order to address on application
    • Drop off - with check or money order         
  6. We'll contact you if we need more information.

Identification document options

Submit copies of 1 of the following combinations:

  1. One primary and at least one secondary (additional documentation may be required)
  2. At least 3 secondary documents (additional documentation may be required)

Primary documents

  • Certified adoption certificate from a U.S. court
  • U.S. passport book or card
  • Secure Minnesota tribal identification card
  • Active duty, reserve or retired U.S. military identification card (DD-2 or Geneva Conventions Common Access Card)
  • Passport from a country other than the U.S. with a I-94 form or with a I-551 stamp
  • Canadian birth or naturalization certificate with a I-94 form attached (Must be presented with a photo Secondary Document issued by a Canadian government agency)
  • One of the following documents issued by the U.S. Department of Justice or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
    • Employment Authorization card with photo (I-688 or I-766 series)
    • Permanent Resident or Resident Alien card (I-551 or I-151)
    • Re-entry Permit/Refuge Travel Document (I-327, I-571)
    • Certificate of Naturalization (N-550, N-570, or N-578)
    • Certificate of Citizenship (N-560, N-561, or N-645)
    • United States Citizen Identification Card (I-179 or I-197)
    • Northern Mariana Card (I-873)
    • American Indian Card (I-872)
  • Photo driver’s license, state identification card or permit, issued by a U.S. state other than Minnesota, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands or a Canadian province or territory
  • Social Security history/transcript document - not a social security card
  • Tax documents

Secondary documents

  • Certified birth record issued by a government bureau of vital statistics or board of health in the United States, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico or the United States Virgin Islands
  • Minnesota Photo driver’s license, state identification card or permit.
  • Certificate of Birth Abroad (FS-545 or DS-1350) issued by the U.S. Department of State
  • Report of Birth Abroad of a United State Citizen (FS-240) issued by the U.S. embassy
  • Certified government-issued marriage certificate (a document other than the marriage certificate currently being amended)
  • Certified U.S. or Canadian court order with full name and date of birth
  • Certified secondary or post-secondary school transcript containing legal full name and date of birth
  • Secondary school (grades 7-12) student identification card with student’s name, photograph and date of birth or unique identification number
    • Identification card must have the academic school year or issue date printed on it
  • Government employee photo identification card from a jurisdiction in the U.S. or Canada
  • Identification card (DD-1173 or DD-214) issued by the U.S. Department of Defense
  • Color-photo permit to carry a firearm or concealed weapon, issued by a U.S. police department or sheriff
  • Pilot’s license issued by the Federal Aviation Administration
