Marriage officiant credential filing

File your "officiant credentials" with us to be able to perform marriages anywhere in Minnesota. Even non-Minnesota residents can file.

How to file

Prepare application

  1. Complete a certificate of filing form (PDF).
  2. Print but do not sign the application.
  3. Get your signature on the application notarized (e-notarization is acceptable).
  4. Get a readable photocopy of your credentials of license or ordination; or a statement of marriage authority from a spiritual authority. (Do not send originals. Submitted credentials will not be returned.)
  5. Gather your application, copies of documents and a $30 check or money order made out to Hennepin County Treasurer.

Processing times

Regular processing

Orders will be processed in 2–3 weeks of receipt.

Faster processing

  • Orders will be processed in 5–7 business days of receipt
  • You must include an additional $20 and write "Expedite" on the envelope

Order status

If it's been over four (4) weeks since you ordered use our vital records order inquiry form.

  • If you cannot use a remote option, please schedule an appointment.
  • For information on an unauthorized person performing ceremony, see Minnesota Statute 517.15.
  • For information on state requirements on civil marriages, see Minnesota Statute 517.04.
  • For information on ministerial credentials, see Minnesota Statute 517.05.
Qualifications

All individuals performing marriages in Minnesota must be at least 21 and provide documentation of officiant credentials. The credentials must include:

  • A signature by an official with the authority to do so, and
  • Language stating you have ministerial credentials or are otherwise authorized to perform marriages
