Vehicle license tabs

We currently provide vehicle license tab renewals by online form, mail or drop-off. Vehicle insurance information must be included in your request.

COVID-19 response

Use the online form whenever possible. Walk-in services are limited based on staffing and physical spacing guidelines.

License tabs can now be renewed using our online form with a credit card payment. 

  1. Gather your renewal notice or vehicle information. 
  2. Gather your insurance information.
  3. Complete the online form.
  4. Within 5-7 business days we will verify your information and email you with instructions to complete your transaction.

You must submit your completed renewal notice from Driver and Vehicle Services to apply by drop off or mail. Insurance information must be written on the notice.

If you do not have your renewal notice, use our online form.

Prepare renewal documents

  1. Find your renewal notice from Driver and Vehicle Services
  2. Write your insurance information on the notice
  3. Make check payable to Hennepin County Treasurer for the exact amount due on the renewal notice.
  4. Check must also include:
    • Current address
    • Phone number
    • Driver's license number
    • License plate number

Submit renewal

Submit your renewal notice, self-addressed stamped envelope and check to a drop-box location or mailing address.

Issuance of tabs

License tabs will be mailed or ready for pick up within 7–10 business days.

If you want to pick-up your tabs, write "pick up" on the envelope and submit items to the location you want to pick up at. We will contact you when your tabs are ready.
