Notary commission

To notarize in Minnesota, you must file your commission in the county you live in.

You must:

  • Be a Hennepin County resident
  • Be a notary
  • Have your commission card - get a copy of your commission on the state's online notary account 

Fee

$20

Processing times 

Processing is how long it takes us to get your order ready.

Mailing time depends on the postal service.

Regular processing

We’ll have your order ready for mailing or pick up within 3 weeks of receipt.

Faster processing

We’ll have your order ready for mailing or pick up within 1 week of receipt.

  • You must include an extra $20 and write "Expedite" on the envelope.

In person processing

We give you a copy of your filing at the time you apply.

Order status

If it's been over 4 weeks since you ordered use our vital records order inquiry form.

Filing process

If you have

  • An old notary public commission certificate (sample PDF) - print and use this Certificate of filing notary commission - old notary (PDF. XMB) form.
  • A new notary public commission certificate (sample PDF) - print and use this Certificate of filing notary commission- new notary (PDF, XMB) form.

Form steps

Place your notary public commission card face up in the designated area on the form like these samples

  • Old commission placement sample (PDF, 1MB)
  • New commission placement sample (PDF, 1MB)
  1. Make a copy of the form with your card on it.
  2. Sign the public commission card in front of a notary. You will sign twice at the bottom of the card.
  3. Have your signatures on the Notary commission filing form notarized.

Submit form 

You can submit your form for filing by mail, drop off or in person.

We'll process your filing and send you a copy of your filled commission.

Drop off

Put your form and check or money order at one of our drop off locations.

Mail in

Mail your original copy with signatures and check or money order to:
