Southbound bridge reopened Friday, November 19; northbound bridge work underway
Work on the southbound bridge is complete and crews began the next construction stage — replacing the northbound West Broadway Avenue bridge.
Change in bridge travel, local access remains same
With the southbound bridge open, you will use the southbound bridge to travel north and south on West Broadway Avenue.
Similar to the construction traffic this past year, we will continue to maintain access for people using West Broadway Avenue. And we will keep access open to the Lowry Avenue (County Road 153) on-ramp and intersection below for most of the work.
There will be occasional short-term, full intersection closures for bridge removal and overnight when setting bridge beams.
Intersection closure and possible overnight work began November 29
Removal of the northbound West Broadway Avenue bridge began Monday, November 29. To get this work done safely, we closed the intersection below connecting Victory Memorial and Theodore Wirth parkways and Oakdale and Lowry avenues to all users. West Broadway will remain open to traffic. Weather permitting, we expect the complete the removal and reopen the intersection in approximately five days.
There will be signed detours that will help guide people using the intersection, ramps and the Grand Rounds Trail. The detour routes are listed below depending on the method and direction of travel.
Theodore Wirth and Victory Memorial parkways connection
- 29th Avenue
- Penn Avenue (County Road 2)
- 34th Avenue
Oakdale and Lowry avenues connection
- Penn Avenue
- West Broadway Avenue (county road)
- Abbott Avenue
Grand Rounds trail users
- Crystal Lake Regional Trail
- Abbott Avenue
- West Broadway Avenue (city street)
- Oakdale Avenue
Using the signed detours will keep you from experiencing additional delays and getting frustrated. And it will help local streets stay safe for the individuals and families who live and play in the area.

Expect increased noise
A majority of the removal work will happen during the workday. However, there may be overnight work for the bridge removal. We will have cranes and other large construction equipment, so people who live or work in the immediate area should anticipate noise during the work. We will make efforts to minimize or avoid overnight work and reduce noise.
