Construction updates

We’re working to minimize impacts during construction.

April through July

Be alert for frequent traffic shifts and lane closures. Projects like this typically begin with intersection work, followed by repaving and then restriping. Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained, but at times people may be routed around the construction zone for safety.

Project information

When the project is complete, people will notice a smoother, repaved road and safety improvements for people who walk, bike and roll. These improvements include:

  • Reconstructed curb ramps to be more accessible, easier to use, and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • A four to three-lane conversion of Hennepin Avenue, meaning one lane of traffic in each direction and a center turn lane, which will calm traffic and reduce speeds
  • Shorter crossing distances to make it safer to cross the road for people walking and rolling
  • Dedicated bike lanes with buffer space between bike lanes, parked vehicles and moving traffic to improve safety for people biking

2024 safety improvements

In 2024, Hennepin County, along with the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), made safety improvements at the intersections of East Hennepin Avenue (County Road 52) and 10th and 11th avenues near I-35W.

Improvements in 2024 included:

  • New traffic signals on East Hennepin Avenue at the intersections of 10th and 11th avenues
  • New audible pedestrian signal systems and push buttons
  • Turn lane changes along East Hennepin Avenue and 11th Avenue
  • New accessible curb ramps and other pedestrian improvements
