Retailer spotlight: Jerry’s Do It Best Hardware
“If you’re looking for it, Jerry’s has it” is the motto of Jerry’s Hardware and Rental, which started out more than 50 years ago with a store in Edina. Now with five locations, Jerry’s stated goal is to be the best hardware store in each of its communities – Edina, St. Louis Park, Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Maple Grove. “We are a well-stocked, small- to medium-sized hardware store that offers good service and good product availability,” says John Connolly, store manager at the Edina location.
Jerry’s services include rental and repair, including rental of lawn and garden equipment, such as tillers and aerators, rug and upholstery cleaning equipment and Milwaukee power tools. Additional services include winter and summer storage of lawn mowers and snow blowers, and tune-ups so they’re ready to go when needed. Jerry’s also repairs windows, screens and most types of small engines.
Says Connolly: “Repair keeps products out of the waste stream. People would much prefer in most cases to get something repaired than to have to go through the expense and process of buying new and getting rid of old equipment. They can spend an extra hundred dollars and keep something running another year or two or five years. When you fix something or clean something, you’re minimizing your impact on the environment and avoiding disposing of something, be it carpet or power equipment.
Connolly joined Jerry’s from another hardware store in Excelsior in 1988. He says he enjoys the challenge of managing a busy hardware store: “It’s never the same two days in a row. That’s the nature of the business.”
