1. Markets, fairs and sales
Flea markets, makers markets, rummage sales, what other names do the fun pop-up sales go by in the summer? From antiques to collectibles, clothing and housewares, these sales have it all. Make a day of it or a whole weekend. Need some tips? We’ve got you covered.
2. Equipment rental
Nothing says summer fun in Minnesota like getting out on the lakes and rivers. Be sure to consider renting your gear to have a day of fun in the sun.

3. Libraries
Membership to a Hennepin County Library is a must with 41 libraries throughout Hennepin County. Not only can you check out books and media at the libraries, they also have computers and printers available for use, summer learning opportunities for kids, and book clubs for all ages. Hennepin County is also home to excellent reuse libraries where you can get a membership to borrow toys, tools and more.

- Twin Cities Library of Things - offers rental of everyday items from household goods to party supplies and more.
4. Home and Garden
Minnesotans love to spend their summers working on the house and yard. This is another great way to reuse and save money. Borrow or rent that equipment you only need once or occasionally. We have plenty of ideas on how to rent tools for DIY home improvement projects.
- Minnesota Tool Library is an excellent reuse library in the Twin Cities. They not only offer rental of tools and equipment, but they offer how-to classes on various subjects throughout the year.
5. Trade games and puzzles
Get the neighborhood, your kids friends’ families or your scout troop to host a game and puzzle trade. Not only is it fun for kids to trade, but there are great games and puzzles for adults to enjoy as well. You can also find trading groups on social media sites if there is something specific you are looking for. Not finding what you’re looking for? There are plenty of thrift stores that might have exactly what you need.

6. Book Sales
Visit the Friends of the Hennepin County Libraries and nonprofit used book sales as a great way to fill your bookshelves while helping the community. Friends of the Hennepin County Libraries are holding sales on a regular basis. What to look for when shopping for used books.

7. Learn to Mend
Find the meditative power of hand sewing, learn the history of the craft, and reduce your consumption by repairing your own clothes! They have something for everyone - Mending 101 is for kids entering grades 6-12 and Drop-in Mending is for adults.

8. Thrifting
Thrifting is becoming such a big deal that now there are huge events dedicated specifically to thrifting. But don’t forget your local thrift stores. Hennepin County has an abundance of great thrifting for some amazing causes, hosting great events throughout the year.

9. Farmer’s Markets
Farmer’s markets have taken over summer. Be sure to bring your reusable tote and enjoy some locally grown or locally made items. A summer day can’t be beat talking with neighbors and friends from across your community while shopping for food for your family. Farmers markets typically come with music and activities, so make the most of a relaxing shopping experience.

10. Are the kids (or you) getting bored during the summer?
Look around the house and find ways to reuse old items into new craft projects or home and garden décor.
