Education and training

Adult education

Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Education offers classes in English Language, GED preparation, computers, math, science, social studies, FastTRAC, career pathways, employment skills, citizenship, and child development.

Associate degree program for low income students

Low-income students with a high school GPA of at least 2.5 can apply for a two-year associate degree program from the University of St. Thomas in the Dougherty Family College in downtown Minneapolis. Each student will be considered for scholarships and grants, with some applicants paying as little as $1,000 per year.

Construction

Summit Academy offers accredited courses in IT, construction and health care. Financial aid is available for qualified students, as well as job placement assistance for graduates.

Culinary arts

People Serving People offers free short-term training programs, including a 13-week culinary training program.

Employment and financial literacy

Center for Changing Lives Minnesota, part of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, offers monthly classes in employment empowerment and financial literacy. 

Health-care

Summit Academy offers accredited courses in IT, construction and health care. Financial aid is available for qualified students, as well as job placement assistance for graduates. 

Minneapolis Employment and Training

Minneapolis Employment and Training administers a variety of employment and free short-term training programs under the direction of the mayor, city council, and Minneapolis Workforce Council.

Teaching

YWCA Early Childhood Teacher Development Program helps students gain professional skills they can take into a classroom.

Technology

Minneapolis TechHire provides training and job placement in software engineering and support roles for nontraditional, diverse IT workers.

Summit Academy offers accredited courses in IT, construction and health care. Financial aid is available for qualified students, as well as job placement assistance for graduates.

The Urban Tech Jobs Program from the Minneapolis Urban League is an accelerated technology training program designed for unemployed adults 18 and over with a high school diploma or GED. Free classes and training are offered along with counseling, paid work experiences, and support for job readiness, personal resiliency and development.

Training programs for new Americans

The International Institute of Minnesota offers:

  • Pathways programs for new American women to train for careers in hospitality and health care
  • Nursing Assistant Program for refugees and immigrants interested in working in health care
  • Hotel Housekeeping Program for woman who are refugees, asylees, permanent residents, naturalized U.S. citizens or victims of trafficking

Apprenticeships

More than 100 employers participate in the Minnesota Apprenticeship Initiative to offer paid on-the-job training with related technical instruction in 29 high-growth occupations spanning five industries: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, information technology and transportation.

Veteran and Military Transition Center

The Veteran and Military Transition Center helps veterans injured or disabled as a result of their military service find programs and resources, locate assistance, access benefits and find or keep a job. Learn more at the Veteran and Military Transition Center webpage.

Veterans employment center

The Veterans Administration and Department of Defense help veterans get civilian employment after active duty. Visit the veterans employment center for job seekers.

Veterans employment programs

Current or former military members, no matter the era of service, receive priority services in all CareerForce locations across the state. See the Employment resources locations section on this page or CareerForce Veteran Resources.

Resources for youth

Job Corps

Job Corps is a no cost program offering career training and HSD/GED to low income youth ages 16–24. Students also receive free room and board, uniforms, medical care, drivers ed, biweekly allowance and more! Job Corps program flyer (PDF, 1MB).

Construction program for at-risk youth

The YouthBuild Program provides specialized training for youth and young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 who are at risk for not completing their high school education.

Education grants and scholarships

The SOAR Program works with youth between the ages of 18 and 24, who have had run-ins with the law and are seeking educational opportunities. SOAR offers grant and scholarship opportunities to youth to help them get their GEDs and additional training. Must live in zip codes listed in the attached flyer.

SOAR is a program of OIC of America.

Step Up

Step Up connects Minneapolis youth ages 14–21 with training and paid internships at over 200 top local employers. 

Resources for people with a criminal history

Job preparation and training

AccessAbility Incorporated's Career and Educational Pathways program supports adults with criminal backgrounds seeking second chances as they reenter the community. Services may include assistance with housing, transportation, legal aid, budgeting and driver’s license reinstatement.  

Job search

Jobs for Felons Hub maintains lists of jobs for felons by city and state, lists of companies that hire felons, and links to job training resources.

  • Pre-register for the May 7 event and learn more about sealing criminal records.
  • Eligibility criteria: Please note that only adult felony cases that were charged or prosecuted by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office are eligible for review, and possible seal, at this event. 
Community resources

Waypoint – find free or low-cost resources such as food, medical assistance, job training and more. This mobile-friendly website has mapping capabilities and can show you how to get to resources.

MNhelp – get information on community services that individuals and communities need to sustain and improve their daily lives such as health care and childcare, job training, education and recreation, retirement, disability and social service information. This directory contains information on nonprofit, public health and human service programs, as well as some for-profit programs such as housing.
