General tour information

HERC is a waste-to-energy facility in action, where Minneapolis waste is received and burned to generate steam for the downtown district energy system and energy sold to Xcel. This tour will describe the waste hierarchy, engineering alternatives to landfills and preventing pollution.

No one under age 13 is allowed to tour HERC. Grades 9-12 and adults are eligible to tour, with accepted group sizes of 5-28 people. (A presentation is available for large groups at their school or location.) For grades 9-12, one adult chaperone is required for every 10 youth. Chaperones shall strictly monitor the safety and behavior of student groups.

Permission slip addendums or liability waiver forms must be signed by every person taking a tour and presented at time of tour. No open-toed shoes, no high heels and no flip flops. Participants are required to wear long (ankle length) pants, socks and long sleeves for protection. Proper dress and punctuality is required.

Visitors should be prepared for loud noises, smells and dust, and for walking up stairs and outdoors.

Groups will be sent further information with guidelines and detailed directions upon tour confirmation.
