Hennepin County Energy Recovery Center tour request form
Hennepin County offers facility tours at the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC) waste-to-energy facility. Please refer to the following safety guidelines to determine what may be available for your group.
Please schedule your tour at least four weeks prior to the requested date, providing three potential dates for your tour. You may fill out the tour request form below to schedule a tour for your group, or call 612-348-4930 for assistance or special accommodations.
What: HERC is a waste-to-energy facility in action, where Minneapolis waste is received and burned to generate steam for the downtown district energy system and energy sold to Xcel. This tour will describe the waste hierarchy, engineering alternatives to landfills and preventing pollution.
Who: Grades 9-12 and adults (no one under age 13 allowed to tour HERC). Group size: 5-28. (A presentation is available for large groups at their school or location.) Chaperones: Grades 9-12, one adult required for every 10 youth. Chaperones shall strictly monitor the safety and behavior of student groups.
When: Tours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Tour start times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours typically last 1.5 hours. No weekends or holidays.
Safety: Permission slip addendums or liability waiver forms must be signed by every person taking a tour and presented at time of tour. No open-toed shoes, no high heels and no flip flops. Participants are required to wear long (ankle length) pants, socks and long sleeves for protection. Proper dress and punctuality is required.
Notice: Visitors should be prepared for loud noises, smells and dust, and for walking up stairs and outdoors.
