Golden Valley Road improvements

County Road 66 in Minneapolis

Hennepin County is planning to mill and overlay, or repave, Golden Valley Road (County Road 66) between Xerxes and Girard avenues in Minneapolis. As part of the project, the county, in coordination with the city of Minneapolis, is evaluating whether to change how the road is striped to create new bike lanes. The overall goal of this project is to make Golden Valley Road a safer and more accessible option for people driving and biking.

Project timeline

Anticipated schedule

  • 2018: parking study and initial community engagement
  • Late 2019: design
  • 2020: repaving and restriping
Proposed bike improvements

The proposed draft includes one-way bike lanes in each direction, with 18-inch buffers between parked vehicles and general lanes. Bike lanes on Golden Valley Road have been included in the Hennepin County’s 2040 Bicycle Transportation Plan (PDF 11MB).

The bike lanes would improve safety for people biking and driving in the corridor, while creating more comfortable ways to move about the neighborhood, city and county. In addition, the lanes would connect residents to Theodore Wirth Regional Park and transit stations in the area.

Public involvement

As an important part of the study, we are coordinating a community-based process to evaluate opportunities to improve safety on Golden Valley Road, and we want to hear from you. Share your experiences and vision for this important neighborhood route at the upcoming events or by using the contact information listed in the project leadership section below.

Upcoming outreach events

Future outreach events will be posted here once they have been scheduled.

Previous outreach

Hennepin County has been talking with residents and other stakeholders about the project in 2018. View the engagement summary of activities and comments (PDF).

On October 18, 2018, Hennepin County staff hosted an open house to provide a project overview - including anticipated project layouts and tentative construction timeline.

Corridor study

Golden Valley Road is an east/west route that can provide strong connection to nearby bikeways for commuting, shopping and recreating. Prior to the mill and overlay, Hennepin County is completing a transportation study to consider possible design options, evaluate the results of the parking study, talk with residents and refine layouts to improve mobility and safety for all users of this segment of Golden Valley Road.

In July 2018, a parking study along Golden Valley Road was completed. The study showed that about only a quarter of available street parking on Golden Valley Road was being used.
