Despite weather, crews keep on schedule and reach major milestone
Foundation work complete
During the weekend of August 4, crews successfully completed the concrete foundation for the new bridge on Golden Valley Road (County Road 66) over Bassett Creek.
Completing the bridge foundation was a major milestone because it was the most time-intensive step of this bridge reconstruction project.
There were many tasks needed to get done in order to construct the foundation, including excavating, removing the existing bridge, testing and installing the foundation framework (pilings and footings) and pouring the foundation.
Despite weather challenges, such as heavy rains this summer, crews have been able to keep the project on schedule.
Structural work underway; concrete archway installed
With the foundation work complete, crews began structural work earlier this week. On Tuesday, August 7, crews installed precast concrete arches which will allow Bassett Creek to flow under Golden Valley Road.
The precast arches above is a concrete structure that is built offsite to specific requirements. After being delivered to the site, the segments are installed onto the foundation. This method of construction is cost effective and shortens construction time, while also providing the quality and durability needed for a new bridge.
With the precast arch installation complete, crews will soon be backfilling the area with dirt in preparation for the roadway rebuilding. This work is expected to last up to a week to complete.
What to expect in the coming weeks
Road rebuilding begins soon
Once backfilling is completed, crews will begin building the new roadway. This work will include:
- grading for the new roadway
- pouring concrete curbs and gutters
- pouring concrete sidewalks along both sides of the bridge
- paving and striping the new roadway
In addition, crews will install ornamental railings on the new bridge as part of aesthetic improvements.
Weather permitting, we anticipate reopening the bridge to traffic on August 31.
Construction activities will continue after bridge reopens
Even after the bridge reopens to traffic, crews will work in the area for an additional month to complete final construction tasks to bring the project to a close. These tasks will include landscaping, paving the final layer of asphalt and final cleanup.
These activities will have minor impacts to traffic. However, during this time, we ask people driving, walking, biking and rolling to slow down and avoid where crews are working for everyone's safety.
For the Golden Valley Road Bridge reconstruction, the construction hours are:
Monday - Saturday: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
With construction projects, there are times where work could possibly end later than construction hours. Any construction work scheduled for after-hours will go through the proper approval process, and residents in the area will be notified.
