Building reuse grants eligibility

Hennepin County has four types of funding available for building reuse projects.

Residential deconstruction

Up to $5,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) based on eligible deconstruction expenses for residential full building removal or renovation/remodeling projects.

Commercial deconstruction

Up to $10,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) based on eligible deconstruction expenses for commercial full building removal or renovation/remodeling projects.

Structural move

Up to $15,000 available per project (up to $5 per square foot) based on expenses for full structural move projects.

Used building material installation

Up to $5,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) that incorporate used building materials into addition, renovation, remodeling, or new construction designs. Used building material installation funds may be used in conjunction with a deconstruction grant or a structural move grant upon approval. Applicant must complete separate application for each grant.

  • Applicants must be a homeowner or developer of a property located within Hennepin County. Publicly owned properties are not eligible for funding.
  • Deconstruction of accessory structures (such as garages and sheds) are not eligible for funding.
  • Hennepin County does not conduct deconstruction work. Grantee must coordinate deconstruction work with contractors and/or salvage outlets and verify project meets reuse and disposal criteria.
  • Grant funding cannot be used for work that has already been completed. Deconstruction, structural move, and used building material purchases and installation work must take place after the agreement to issue grant funds is established.

Residential deconstruction projects

Residential property up to 4 units built prior to 1970; project size at least 500 square feet

Reuse criteria

  • A minimum of five different building materials from category A must be deconstructed for reuse.
  • At least 1,000 pounds of lumber from category B must be deconstructed for reuse.
  • All non-reusable building material generated from the project must be sent to a construction and demolition waste recycling processing facility that achieves a minimum 60% recycling rate.

Commercial deconstruction projects

Commercial property, including multi-family apartment buildings over 4 units; project size at least 500 square feet

Reuse criteria

  • A minimum of five different building materials from category A must be deconstructed for reuse.
  • At least 1,000 pounds of lumber from category B must be deconstructed for reuse.
  • All non-reusable building material generated from the project must be sent to a construction and demolition waste recycling processing facility that achieves a minimum 60% recycling rate.

Used building material installation projects

Reuse criteria

  • A minimum of five different used building materials from category A must be installed into project design.
  • At least 500 pounds of used building materials from category B must be installed into project design.

Note: many salvage outlets require nails be removed from wood prior to donation or sale.

Construction and demolition waste recycling processing facilities

The companies listed below achieve a minimum 60% recycling rate and accept loads of construction and demolition materials from residents and contractors. They can also provide roll-off boxes to keep onsite to collect materials throughout the project at a comparable price of sending these materials to a landfill. Plan ahead to coordinate recycling.
