Tonkawa Road (County Road 135) bridge reconstruction


Hennepin County, in partnership with the city of Orono, is replacing a bridge on Tonkawa Road (County Road 135).

Often referred to as Boy Scout Bridge, the bridge carries Tonkawa Road over the channel between Maxwell Bay and North Arm of Lake Minnetonka and is located between North Shore Drive (County Road 51) to the south and Bayside Road (County Road 84) to the north.

Construction is scheduled to begin summer 2016.

Detours and closures

Starting June 16, Tonkawa Road (County Road 135) will be closed between Bayside Lane (County Road 84) and North Shore Drive (County Road 51). The roadway will be closed until this fall.

The channel beneath the Tonkawa Road Bridge (between North Arm and Maxwell Bay) will also be closed during construction.

Built in 1930 and remodeled in 1977, the existing bridge is 36 feet long, 26 feet wide and made of steel beams and a timber deck. It is a two-lane bridge with no shoulder and no provisions for pedestrians. Current sufficiency rating for the bridge is 28.5 out of a possible 100 and is classified as structurally deficient. It is posted to restrict certain vehicle loads. The new bridge will be wider, and will have crash worthy concrete railings.
