Four communities in Hennepin County will soon be putting people to work on projects to promote economic development and energy conservation, and renovate affordable housing thanks to Community Development Block Grant funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Hennepin County is the lead agency of the Urban Hennepin County Community Block Grant Program.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program allocates funding to local governments for a variety of activities meant to create suitable living environments, provide decent affordable housing and create economic opportunities, primarily for persons of low and moderate income. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allocates CDBG funds to communities based on a formula that takes into account several aspects of community need, including the extent of poverty, housing overcrowding, age of housing, and population growth. The following cities will receive grant funds:
Osseo Public Safety Building: $200,000 to replace the existing public safety building, which does not meet the needs of the police department, by purchasing and renovating an existing building to include energy efficiency improvements such as LED lighting and a green roof.
Project for Pride in Living - Louisiana Court Apartments: $120,000 for energy efficiency improvements to this affordable rental complex of 129 units including replacing energy inefficient boilers and windows, and installing CO2 detectors.
Hopkins Housing Authority – Dow Towers: $200,000 to replace windows in all living units and common areas in Dow Towers, a 76-unit public housing facility for seniors and persons with disabilities to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Cornerstone Group – Medley Park Townhomes: $100,000 for energy conservation improvements and limited exterior rehabilitation to this 30-unit townhome community for lower-income residents including replacing exterior windows and doors, and replacing rain gutters and siding.
