Hennepin County will use $150,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding it has received as part of the Facility Cost Share Grant program to update lighting control panels, and install more energy efficient light fixtures and occupancy and daylighting controls in the county’s Health Services Building. Occupancy lighting controls limit energy use by turning off the lights in rooms no one is using. Daylighting controls sense the amount of light entering a room and dim or turn off the lights when there is enough light coming in from outside to illuminate the space.
The State of Minnesota Department of Commerce, Office of Energy Security created the Facility Cost Share Grant program using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding it received from the United States Department of Energy. The grant program funds energy conservation projects in local governments and school districts, financing 50 percent of project costs up to a maximum contribution of $150,000. To complete its energy conservation project, Hennepin County will match the Recovery grant funding dollar for dollar and contribute $50,000 in utility rebates to the project budget.
About four jobs are expected to be created or retained due to this Recovery Act project. The new energy efficient light fixtures and controls are expect to save over $30,000 in energy costs each year.
