Hennepin County government employs 12,000 people, making it the second largest employer in Hennepin County. By encouraging employees to find alternatives to commuting with personal vehicles and offering programs to help employees live active lifestyles, Hennepin County helps employees find ways to reduce their personal environmental impact.
- Promoting employee telecommuting options. By allowing employees to work from home or from mobile locations, we reduce traffic congestion and the need for office space, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. From 2006 to 2007, the number of county employees telecommuting increased by 56 percent from 1,286 to 2,011.
- Offer subsidies for metro transit passes to encourage the use of public transportation. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation gave Hennepin County a "Best Workplace for Commuters" designation because of the county’s efforts in offering employees public transportation subsidies and telecommuting opportunities.
