Yard and tree waste includes brush, garden debris, grass clippings, leaves, sod, logs, trees and stumps, plants (indoor and outdoor), compost, mulch and wood chips. It is illegal to put yard and tree waste in your household garbage.

Disposal options

Curbside pick-up

Some yard waste material can be picked up at the curb by your waste hauler. Contact your waste hauler to schedule a subscription for weekly or bi-weekly yard waste pickup or a special one-time pickup, and for material preparation requirements and fees.

Drop-off locations

The following are yard waste drop-off sites in Hennepin County. Call first for hours, special conditions and fees. Also check with your city for municipal drop-off locations. 

A quarantine is in place for Hennepin County to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer. Hennepin County residents should take yard waste to a site within the county. You may be turned away if you bring yard waste to sites outside of Hennepin County.

Backyard composting

Composting in your backyard is an easy way to turn much of the waste from your yard and kitchen into a rich material that you can use to improve your soil.

New compostable bag requirements

Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, residents in Hennepin County - excluding Minneapolis - who bag their yard and organic waste will be required to put their waste out for pickup in compostable bags. Acceptable bags include either paper (kraft) bags or compostable plastic bags. Residents who use yard waste carts or who deliver and dump out their yard waste at compost sites are not affected.

Disposing of ash tree waste

The emerald ash borer, a destructive tree pest that attacks and kills ash trees, was recently discovered in Hennepin County. To prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, a quarantine is in place for Hennepin County that prohibits hauling ash tree waste out of the county.

Ash tree waste should be taken to the closest disposal site to minimize the spread of the emerald ash borer. Some yard waste haulers and sites cannot accept ash tree waste.
