Regional human services offices

Hennepin County is opening six human services offices throughout the county. These will be located close to where you live, work, and attend school. Each office will provide access to the full range of financial, social and public health services the county offers.

It’s a big change to the way we provide the services many Hennepin County residents use, such as access to medical, emergency, child care and food assistance, child support and homeless services.

About this initiative

The Hennepin County Human Services and Public Health Department touches one in four lives in the county. We help people gain employment, stabilize their housing, feed their families, access health care and keep their families safe and intact.

We are locating six human services offices, including one in south Minneapolis, closer to where our clients live, work and attend school. We are putting our services where our clients live. That’s everywhere.

Benefits for residents

People who already have been getting services at the Northwest Hub in Brooklyn Center have told us that visits there are significantly shorter and more efficient than they were at Century Plaza, in downtown Minneapolis. Transit time is shorter. Parking is free. The hours they can save is more time for families and jobs.

Helping the community

The county provides assessments and referrals, and based on their individual or family needs, clients could be connected to a number of programs, to help them:

  • Apply for food support
  • Apply for Medical Assistance
  • Address homelessness
  • Deal with utility shut-offs, evictions and other emergencies
  • Get support for seniors in their homes
  • Learn about early childhood programs
  • Support people with disabilities
  • Improve mental health or chemical health

Volunteer at a regional human services office

Hennepin County’s Human Services and Public Health department is looking for friendly, reliable people to volunteer as greeters at the new North Minneapolis human services office, at 1001 Plymouth Avenue North, Minneapolis. Greeters will welcome and guide visitors, answer questions and assist with special projects.

Successful candidates will be 18 years old or older, will be good communicators and team players. Candidates will be expected to be reliable, self-starters who are respectful of client confidentiality. They also should enjoy working with diverse populations. Bilingual skills are a plus.

The department is looking for volunteers who can commit to two four-hour shifts each work week – morning or afternoon – for at least three months.

Interested volunteer candidates should call 612-348-5835 or contact kristine.poelzer@hennepin.us.
