Vacation and sick leave

The vacation and sick leave program is one of two paid leave programs. The program you use depends on the date you were hired, rehired or moved into a regular (permanent) position and/or union status.

Sick leave

May be used when you need time off for the following medical reasons:

  • You are sick
  • A family member (spouse, child, adult child, parent, sibling, mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandchild, grandparent, step-parent, or person residing in your household) is sick and needs your care
  • You have a doctor, or dentist, or other medical appointment
  • You are having a baby
  • You are going to donate an organ
  • You have a disability related to pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion, childbirth, sexual assault, domestic abuse or stalking
  • You have been exposed to contagious disease

May also be used for:

  • Trade time for fitness reimbursements
  • Payment of long-term disability insurance
  • Payment of short-term disability insurance
  • Severance pay


May be used when you need time off for:

  • Non-medical reasons
  • Medical reasons (subject to sick leave rules, policies, and procedures)
  • The vacation and PTO donation program

Vacation and sick leave hours and accrual

  • 1 day = 8 hours
  • Accrual rates are prorated for part-time employees.
  • Accruals are earned on a per-pay-period basis.
  • Rates and balances are available on your APEX home page.
  • Maximum unused vacation is 35 days (280 hours). No additional accrual after 35 days.
  • Maximum unused sick leave is unlimited. After 90 days, additional accrual is split between sick leave and vacation.
